Discord

My experience with Discord has been quite positive. It’s a versatile platform that excels in facilitating communication within communities, both large and small. The user interface is intuitive, allowing easy navigation between different servers and channels. Voice, video, and text chat features are robust, supporting smooth real-time interactions. Additionally, the integration of bots and third-party apps enhances functionality, making it possible to manage tasks, play games, and access various utilities directly within Discord. Regular updates and an active support community also ensure continuous improvement and troubleshooting assistance. Working in a team of around 20, one of the tools we have adopted since lockdown and everyone working from home has been Discord. Traditionally, it has been designed for the gaming community as a virtual communication tool, however it has worked really well for us.

Pros

It allows people to continue conversations as if they were in an office. We've setup a number of "rooms", which team members can freely join whenever they want. If a discussion is getting a little hectic on Slack, the team moves to discord to quickly discuss the solution.

It's great because its informal and doesn't require booking meetings. And team members still get to have a casual chat if they feel like it.

Cons

It takes a little discipline to get right. If you have joined a room and someone sees you there, you don't necessarily have a notification that someone is wanting to chat. You hear them immediately so you need to be present and paying attention!

The tool has just launched video support and is still building out capability in video calling. It limits the number of connections to 25 in one.
